Butterflyfish looks like a smaller species of angelfish (Pomacanthidae), but unlike the preopercle that have thorns on the gill cover. Some members of the genus Heniochus resemble Moorish Idol fish (Zanclus cornutus) from Zanclidae monotypic. Among the paraphyletic 'Perciformes', is the kind that might not be too far with the family of Butterflyfish, while Zanclidae closer.
